Research ND Awards Funding Requests Totaling $864,368

The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission awarded funding requests for three Research ND Grants totaling $864,368 at its meeting held on June 23, 2015.
Research ND promotes the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships. Research ND provides matching funds to help companies pay for the university research.
Through Research ND and Research ND BIO, firms have the opportunity to leverage their research, development and commercialization funds and gain access to the creative talents and extensive research base of North Dakota’s Research Universities. Research ND and Research ND BIO matching funds are awarded on a competitive basis for projects based on proposals submitted jointly by researchers from a North Dakota research university and a private sector partner.
The following award requests were funded:
Research ND
  • UND Department of Computer Science in partnership with FedEx was awarded $314,368 to use its high performance computing capacity and aviation management expertise to develop software with FedEx that will increase efficiencies in its loading, unloading and flight operations. 
  • UND Energy and Environmental Research Center in partnership with Accelergy Corporation was awarded $250,000 to develop methods to convert vegetable oils to waxes, lubricants, transformer fluids, and low-toxicity drilling fluids. These products will be both environmentally friendly and produced from North Dakota products. 
  • UND Regional Weather Information Center in partnership with Exelis, Inc. was awarded $300,000 to develop techniques, devices, and methods to aid in risk and safety assessment for performing beyond-visual-line-of-sight UAS operations. 
The next deadline Research ND, Research ND BIO, and Venture Grant applications is August 22, 2015.
The overall goal of Research ND, Research ND BIO and Venture grant programs is to have a long term positive economic impact on the State and Private Sector through various means including, but not limited to; economic diversification, improved production factors, and the development of new markets.
